Check an ICE Release

To find someone released from ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations custody after a Calhoun County jail episode, keep the county and immigration events separate. A person can leave the Calhoun County Adult Detention Center through transfer to ICE without entering the community. ICE’s Online Detainee Locator may show present custody and, under current agency resource guidance, some people released from ICE custody within 60 days. Yet exclusions, safety rules, and update delays mean that a missing result does not prove release. The locator, information line, and agency record work together.

Where ICE Releases Go

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations administers civil immigration custody. The research did not establish an ICE detention center physically located in Calhoun County. A person whose county criminal custody ends may be transferred to an ICE facility elsewhere. That county departure and the later immigration outcome are two custody events with different dates, agencies, and records.

Leaving ICE custody can mean release under an immigration process, transfer to another authority, or removal from the United States. Removal is not a Calhoun County community release. Neither is a county transfer to an immigration detainer. Preserve the exact agency language and ask for the receiving authority when the county released record is unclear.

Two-event rule: the Calhoun jail release records the end of sheriff custody; ICE records determine what happened in immigration custody afterward.

Search ICE Custody and Release

Open the official ICE Online Detainee Locator System. The strongest route uses the nine-digit A-number and country of birth. Add leading zeroes when the A-number has fewer than nine digits. The second route uses exact first and last name, country of birth, and birth information. Preserve hyphens and spelling, then try documented variants if an exact search fails.

  1. Collect the A-number if available, plus the correct country of birth.
  2. Run the number search with all nine digits, including leading zeroes.
  3. If the number is unknown, search the exact name and birth information.
  4. Compare the result with the Calhoun County release or transfer date.
  5. If ICE shows custody, use the listed facility or field-office information for confirmation.
  6. If no result appears, call the ICE information line and request the relevant custody record rather than assuming release.

The current ICE resource page says ODLS can include people currently in ICE custody or released within the past 60 days. The locator landing language focuses on current ICE custody and CBP custody longer than 48 hours. Because those descriptions differ, treat the recent-release window as a possible display, not a guaranteed archive.

ICE Locator Limits in Calhoun

Not every person appears in ODLS. Juveniles are excluded. ICE may withhold a location for safety, security, or other discretionary reasons. Records can lag, and spelling, biographical details, or an incorrect country of birth can prevent a match. A person recently arrested by CBP may not meet the locator’s time threshold. A person transferred between facilities may also show delayed information.

ODLS is a locator, not a certified release or removal record. A focused ICE records request may be necessary for historical custody dates, the receiving facility, or an immigration release document.

ICE Contact and Records

The ICE Detention Reporting and Information Line is 888-351-4024. The researched official resource lists service Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern, with language assistance. For a formal record, use ICE’s proper FOIA or custody-record channel and define the date range and document. Ask for detention, transfer, or release information tied to the A-number. Do not ask ICE to interpret the Calhoun criminal case. The county jail and court maintain those separate records.

Calhoun Release to an ICE Detainer

Calhoun County’s released detail can show that sheriff custody ended and may identify the release path or receiving agency. If it reflects transfer to immigration authorities, that timestamp is affirmative evidence only for the local booking. It does not establish arrival at a specific ICE site, later immigration release, removal, or the end of the criminal case.

Build a short sequence: Calhoun admit date, Calhoun release or transfer date, receiving agency, ICE locator check date, and any later ICE event. The separate dates prevent a common mistake in which “released” on the county system is read as “free.” The county case may also continue in the Tyler court portal after physical county custody ends.

Note: A court case, county custody episode, and ICE custody episode can all remain distinct even when they concern one person.

ICE After Federal Criminal Custody

ICE can receive a person after USMS pretrial custody or after a BOP sentence. In each sequence, the first federal agency’s release date marks the end of its own custody. Immigration custody begins a new episode. BOP “Released” does not rule out ICE control, and a federal judicial release order does not necessarily defeat a separate immigration basis for detention.

Use the Southern District USMS guide for pretrial custody and transport. Use BOP for sentenced federal custody. Use ODLS and ICE records for the immigration episode. Keep the sources aligned with their authority rather than using one federal result as a substitute for all three.

ICE Release Versus Removal

An ICE release generally means the person left ICE detention, sometimes under conditions or an ongoing immigration process. Removal means departure from the United States under immigration authority. Transfer means another facility or agency assumed custody. These words have materially different consequences and should be copied from the official record without embellishment.

ODLS may not reveal the full legal basis or later case history. Immigration court material and ICE records may be needed to understand the process. A recent-release result should be treated as an agency status, not proof that every immigration matter ended. Similarly, a no-result should not be converted into a claim of removal.

Request an ICE Release Record

Before requesting a record, collect the person’s full name and variants, A-number, country of birth, date of birth, and approximate custody dates. Identify the last known facility or the agency that transferred the person. Ask for a defined custody-history, transfer, or release document, and include a date range. Request the receiving agency when another custodian may have taken control.

Keep the request separate from a Calhoun County Public Information Act request. The sheriff owns the local jail booking and release sheet. ICE owns federal immigration custody material. A court owns its orders. Sending each request to the correct custodian reduces delay and avoids an incomplete answer that appears broader than it is.

No ICE Result Is Inconclusive

Absence from ODLS can reflect an excluded person, a short CBP episode, delayed data, a spelling mismatch, safety limits, transfer, release outside the display period, or a record that is no longer shown. It cannot establish that ICE never held the person. It also cannot prove present freedom.

Repeat the search with the best identifier, document the access date, call DRIL, and ask the relevant field office or records channel. Compare those findings with the Calhoun County release detail and any federal court record. This layered check is slower than relying on one screen, but it preserves the line between county release and immigration custody.
